"4:09 by Soyung Lee started from “8½”, a title of a film by Federico Fellini (1964) and a title of an exhibition by Harald Szeemann (1969), which was the proposed theme from Sunghui Lee*. After seeing the relay exhibition project in 2017 at Sewoon Arcade, Sunghui Lee thought about solitude, irony, and conflict of a creator (including the artists and the curator). Hence, Sunghui chose Fellini and Szeemann as pioneers of dealing with such sentiments sparked from a relationship based on creativity, and selected the two creators’ work by the same title, “8½”, as the artists’ labyrinth.
While Fellini and Szeemann named their work (film) by the number of produced films and of years curtailing for exhibitions, Soyung Lee “presumed the time, 4:09 am/pm, to be a time in a day for creators to be a bit lazy to daydream or get lost in thoughts.” The artist spent the last few years working on small-scale video productions, where the roles of a director, staff, and actors were divided; she directly and indirectly reflected some thoughts provoked during this process in 4:09.
If the solitude of the great artists of the 20th century Modernism such as Fellini or Szeemann was a subject of melancholy itself, Soyung Lee approached creator’s solitude as responsibility and isolation felt when making many decisions during a production. Lee says a creator’s solitude was not an independent notion of contemplation, as she wouldn’t normally think or speak of it. Therefore, the image of a creator and a Modernist genius like Fellini or Szeemann, who creates his own world in the solitude, was both heavy and light in weight from time to time, leaving her with a complex set of emotions."

2018년 아르코미술관에서 열린 <옵세션>전은 기획자가 참여작가마다 개별적인 주제를 부여하고, 작가마다 이를 해석하여 작품을 제작하는 형식이었다. 기획자 이성휘는 페데리코 펠리니의 영화 <8과 1/2(1964년)>과 하랄드 제만이 기획한 같은 제목의 전시 <8과 1/2(1969년)>를 주제로 부여하면서 ‘창작자의 모순, 갈등, 고독’ 이란 키워드를 함께 제시했고, 이를 모티브로 제작한 작품이 <4:09>이다.
펠리니와 제만이 창작물의 수와 연도를 따라 <8과 1/2>이란 제목을 지었다면, 이소영은 새벽과 오후 4시 9분을 창작자들이 꿈과 상념, 망상에 빠질 수 있는 조금 나른한 시간으로 상정했다. 등장인물 간의 대화 내용과 독백은 동시대의 창작자인 기획자, 배우, 작가가 겪는 일련의 고민과 생각들을 담고 있다. 펠리니 감독과 제만의 제작과 기획 방식에 드러난 고뇌가 고독 속에서 자신의 세계를 구축하는 모더니스트적인 창작자의 모순과 갈등에 기인한다면, 이 작품은 동시대 예술가들이 소규모 프로덕션 형식으로 일할 때 서로의 역할 분담과 창작자의 소통 방식, 관객의 수용 범위를 고민하는 과정에서 직면하는 책임감과 고립감을 다룬다.
세계적인 거장 감독과 기획자의 1960년대 작품을 동시대적인 의미로 재고찰하는 과정에서 내용뿐 아니라 형식의 고민 또한 길어졌다. 작품을 컬러와 흑백 2개의 영상으로 구성하여 미쟝센에 드러나는 대칭적인 질감과 색감, 무게를 재현하고, 1편에 등장한 배우들이 역할을 바꾸어 2편에 재등장하며 서로의 역할에 따른 캐릭터의 변화를 그려내고자 했다.
