It is one of the series of work produced for the project on Korean diasporas in Central Asia, "THE FUTURE IS COMING FROM ALL DIRECTIONS."
“Resettlement” and “independence” are the two main keywords in the history of the Korean diaspora in Central Asia, whose members, known as Koryo-saram, were deported from Russia by Stalin in 1937. Members of the fourth generation of the Korean diaspora participated in this performance/interview at the Koryo Theatre in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which was founded in 1932 and continues to stage performances in Korean to this day.
Participants were asked to choose seats in the theater and answer questions regarding their strategies, if they would ever had to migrate or relocate to an unknown place, and about what independent lives they envision for themselves. Of the three vertical screens, the top two show video recordings of this performance/interview, while the third screen at the bottom shows images of the Karatal River in Ushtobe; the local train station where the Koryo-saram first arrived; an early settlement of the Koryo-saram; and a dinner party of second-generation Koryo-saram, who joyfully dance various Russian dances.

중앙아시아 고려인 디아스포라를 주제로 2011년부터 2013년까지
세로로 상영되는 3채널 화면 중, 상위 두 화면은 카자흐스탄 고려인 4세대 젊은이들과 함께한 퍼포먼스/인터뷰 작업의 영상 기록이고, 가장 아래쪽의 세 번째 화면은 고려인 초기 정착 마을인 우슈토베의 강가와 기차역, 고려인 2세대 할머니들이 러시아 문화권의 다양한 춤을 추며 즐기는 디너파티의 모습을 담고 있다.
인터뷰의 질문은 ‘이주’와 ‘독립’, 즉 고려인들이 체제의 변화와 영향 아래 겪은 과거사에 연계한다. 이 인터뷰-퍼포먼스는 참여자인 고려인 청년들이 각자 원하는 관객석의 위치에 자리잡고 앉는 것으로 시작한다. 이들은 자의적으로, 또는 다른 영향력에 의해 낯선 곳으로 이주할 때의 생존 전략, 미래의 독립적인 삶의 모습 등에 관한 질문에 현재를 살아가는 젊은 세대로서 각자의 생각을 전한다.
